An Amharic-speaking Lutheran congregation in the heart of Addis Ababa. Since 1963 we have gathered on this ground to worship, to learn the Word, and to serve our neighbours.

Who we are
A congregation rooted in Addis Ababaስለ እኛ
Lideta Mekane Yesus Church is an Amharic-speaking Lutheran congregation of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), part of the Addis Ababa Synod. We have worshipped on this ground since the sanctuary was dedicated in 1963.
Our story
1961
The ground is purchased
The present church site in the Lideta area of Addis Ababa is acquired.
1963
The sanctuary is dedicated
The church building is dedicated on 1 December 1963, and an Ethiopian evangelist is called to serve.
1960s–70s
The Amharic congregation is organised
The Amharic-speaking Lideta Mekane Yesus congregation is formed and Kes Asfaw Kalbero serves it for many years.
1974–1991
Growth under the Derg
As other churches are closed, believers find a home here and the congregation grows significantly.
Today
A church for the city
Part of the Addis Ababa Synod of the EECMY — one of the largest Lutheran church bodies in the world.
What we believe
Scripture
The Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God and the only rule of faith and life.
Grace
We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone — not by our works.
The Church
We confess the Apostles', Nicene and Athanasian Creeds and the Augsburg Confession.
Holistic Ministry
With the EECMY we hold that the Gospel is proclaimed in both word and deed — preaching and serving human need together.
